After yet another "knife" injury at a popular night club a week ago, when I saw this book I was drawn to get it, out of sheer curiosity."Imagine going to work wearing body armour and knife-proof gloves and carrying a few other ‘protective items’." In this autobiographical account of the day-to-day life of a bouncer, you don't have to imagine it because author, Bill Carson describes everything in vivid detail.
Movies such as Patrick Swaye's "Roadhouse," and Chow Yun Fat's "Full Contact" are romanticized, action oriented thrillers featuring elite bouncers. Carson's book is the "reality" version, and is a fascinating journey into the often dangerous and unforgiving world of a "old-world" bouncer.
Carson starts the book with some very interesting tidbits of "bouncer" history. Bouncers are essentially guardians of an establishment and their origins date way back to the Ancient Greeks.
In today's world, bouncers have turned into security guards . In England and many other locations throughout the world, bouncers have to be trained in first aid, crowd control, and in the use of psychological techniques. They have to be licensed and are under numerous legal restrictions, which according to Carson puts them at terrible risk.
During the years when Bill Carson was a part-time bouncer the world of "the bouncer" was unlicensed and unrestricted and often attracted thugs, street fighters and ex-convicts. Carson's background and entry into the profession was as a Karate and boxing expert. His rough and brutal Karate training brought with it a moral code. Throughout his years as a bouncer, he determined to "treat people the way he would want to be treated," and deal with the rest as best he could.
The world of a bouncer, is by nature a violent world, where drunks and thugs seek out confrontations and fights. It is this world we see in the incidents Carson recorded in his diary.
If you regularly go to clubs, dance venues, and large parties you will gain a great appreciation for the people who are there to protect you. It won't just be "the guy" at the door anymore!
I sit at a computer all day long and this is a world that was totally beyond my comprehension! I found it to be an eye opening education and insight into a very different world, where things can go terribly wrong in an instant!

Show No Fear Redux Bouncers diary Mr Bill Carson 9781500932947 Books Reviews
Surprisingly good. I expected it to be a bit poorly written (my bias not knowing a single bouncer) but the book was not hampered by the language at all. I was entertained but wish the end didn't stop so abruptly.
Whenever I enter a club, I have honestly given little thought to the bouncers or door keeps, aside from the standard and incredibly practical ‘stay out of their way.’ I am not violent, I generally don’t get loud and I rarely hang with people that do, so my contact with Bouncers has been the polite nod or ID check. Now, after reading Bill Carson’s re-worked “Show No Fear; A Bouncer’s Diary – Redux,” I can’t get those gatekeepers out of my mind. I am visiting a club on New Year’s Ever and I know that I will be paying MUCH more attention to the man at the door than I ever did before…. And I am not quite sure that is a good thing.
This book, birthed from a diary of a Bouncer, is really a tale of human experience – though it hedges closer to the dark than the light. Bill, our ‘friendly’ Bouncer and narrator had run into all sorts of people in his varied career- some of them so unbelievable I had to read the chapter a few times. From his first physical trainings in a Dojo to his fledgling Door Duty at a birthday party in the 90’s through a successful business and everything in between, this is a violent and dark look at an underbelly few of us have ever considered.
